“Top 5 Wednesday” is a weekly meme currently hosted on Goodreads by Sam of Thoughts on Tomes, where you list your top 5 for the week’s chosen topic. This week’s topic is: Favourite Friend Groups.
Me: *Muttering* I will not make this post all about Dragon Age and Final Fantasy and anime. I will not make this post all about Dragon Age and Final Fantasy and anime. I will not–
Me #2: Oh, please. You know you want to.
Me: …….I will not–
Me #2: C’mon. Just do one.
I’m weak and it’s late (why oh why do I keep writing these posts at 1 AM??), so I added one Dragon Age to the list. But the rest are examples from books and you’re spared from having to scroll through a 5000-word essay on how much I love Bioware and Final Fantasy games. For today, anyway!
1. The Raven Cycle Kids
I’m only halfway through the series right now but I’m already very much in love with the Blue + Raven Boys dynamic. These kids could not be more different from one another, but they still somehow manage to fit together perfectly. And I love how Gansey is the one who holds them all together.
2. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants – Carmen, Bridget, Tibby, Lena
I have no idea how the Travelling Pants series holds up as an adult but I adored it when I was 12-14 years old. These girls supported each other unconditionally in every way, regardless of the distance between them, and I found that to be so inspiring and moving. It offers such a positive depiction of female friendships that we always need more of in YA.
3. Kings of the Wyld – Saga
Saga used to be a mega-famous mercenary group back in the day and now, decades later, they’re a bunch of retired middle-aged men with families, beer guts, and confidence issues. And I love them to bits–especially their willingness to drop everything to help out one of their members.
As individuals they were each of them fallible, discordant as notes without harmony. But as a band they were something more, something perfect in its own intangible way.
4. The Gentleman Bastards
The dynamic of Locke, Jean, Calo, and Galdo (and later, Sabetha) is one of the main things that make The Gentleman Bastards series so addictive and compelling. They may drive each other crazy, but their love runs deep and wide and they’ll do just about anything–kill, rob (well, more so than usual), sacrifice–for one another.
“Bug,” Calo said, “Locke is our brother and our love for him knows no bounds. But the four most fatal words in the Therin language are ‘Locke would appreciate it.'”
“Rivalled only by ‘Locke taught me a new trick,'” added Galo.
“The only person who gets away with Locke Lamora games …”
“… is Locke …”
“… because we think the gods are saving him up for a really big death. Something with knives and hot irons …”
“… and fifty thousand cheering spectators.”
5. Dragon Age 2 – Hawke and Co.
I will defend this game until the day I die because, among other things, DA2 is the “found family” trope at its finest. In this ensemble we have a lady guard captain, a pirate captain, an elven blood mage, a storytelling dwarf, a former slave, a would-be revolutionary, plus Hawke the protagonist and their sweet sister/asshole brother. While calling them “friends” might be a bit of a stretch–half of them hate each other and the other half just want some peace and quiet in their lives–they’re most definitely family. A weird, dysfunctional family who go on
murder sprees adventures together.
Totally forgot to about Locke and the gang! Probably because I was trying not to mention Six of Crows and those two series tend to go hand and hand for my brain.
Great list! and yes, it is hard not to make a list all anime or Final Fantasy haha
I’m like the only person who hasn’t read Six of Crows yet, but if I did, I’m sure its characters would have been on my list–I’ve heard great things about them. 😀
Super amazing… it is a book I think about re-reading all the time.
I really need to get to the Raven Cycle…I just know I’m going to love it.
YEAH I think it’s totally up your alley, Alex! The characters are all so lovable
I used to love The Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants and related to it so much! Great list!
Thank you! I remember I sewed a miniature replica “travelling pants” out of old jean scraps after reading the first book. 😀
These are great examples, especially Kings of the Wyld😊 I seek out books with strong friend groups so I feel like I’ve been reading a lot of them lately.
I just finished Bloody Rose and I absolutely loved the friendship dynamic in that one too!
Ha! I love the Gangsey! (Not sure if that’s a book naming or a fandom, but it totally fits!)
Omg I didn’t know “gangsey” was a thing! It’s perfect 😀
I love The Raven Boys so much! Also, Jean and Locke are my boys. <3
They have the best banter! And I’m anxiously waiting for the release date on Thorn of Emberlain to drop… *sigh*
I still need to read the rest of the Gentlemen Bastard book but I really loved the first one. 😍
Aw I totally forgot about the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants until now 🙂
My friend and I were so obsessed with it as tweens. 😀
I just remember seeing the movie — I don’t think I’ve read the book!! hmm. I wonder if it’d be any good reading it for the first time as an adult…
I’m curious too! I’m tempted to do a reread, but I’m also kind of afraid I’ll end up not liking it 🙂
I haven’t read most of these but YESSSS THE RAVEN BOYS + BLUE are just so amazing?!? xx
YES!! I can’t wait to read the next two books (and the upcoming Ronan trilogy!)
Yes! I’ve been waiting for someone to mention Lies of Locke Lamora for this theme. The Gentleman Bastards are the epitome of squad goals!! Awesome post!
I’m surprised I haven’t seen anyone else mention it! I love them so much! (*cries forever about the ending of Locke Lamora*)
I know, it was so heartbreaking!!
I love this list! So many wonderful friendships 💕 Blue + the Raven Boys and the members of Saga would’ve totally been on my list as well. I haven’t read the Traveling Pants books in ages, but now I kind of want to reread them to see how they hold up. Plus I really am THAT thirsty for some positive female friendships in books!
Oh good, I’m not the only one dying for more female friendships. 😀 And I totally want to do a reread too (and a rewatch!)
Well, the only one I really know is the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants so I’ll cheat and say that one? 😂 I think you know that I only recently bought my first HP because I’m the only person in the world that hasn’t read it, but I WILL read it, and I’m sure I’ll be updating my answer. Great post, Kathy! ♥️
Haha I can’t wait to see what you think of the HP series! It starts out really charming and fun but then Rowling ramps up the dark stuff as the series goes on. You’re in for a ride!
OMG I haven’t read any books on this list but own a few of them lol…The quotes from Locke Lamora makes it seem like a funny read. Would you say they banter like Bridge Four? Man, I’m going to have to do this prompt again someday. I love friendship groups!
And lol at your chant in the intro! I gave myself a one anime limit!
Oh my duuuude the banter in Locke Lamora is AMAZING!!! Lynch is my favourite when it comes to banter/insults in fantasy–they’re so hilarious. Go go read it!
Ahh I really want to read Lies of Locke Lamora! I swear everytime I see it, it just calls at me but I just never pick it up 😂
Ohh it’s so fun and addicting, Tasya!
I never knew the sisterhood of the traveling pants was a book! I really want to watch the movie but I guess I should read the book first now.
The movie is really good too! It’s sweet and just a little sad and the main casting is just PERFECT.
Hahaha! I love your comment at the end about Harry/ Ron/ Hermione. I did this post as well and I did mention them at the beginning just to get them out of the way. I love them but they were *too* obvious!
Glad to see you have some unique ones here!
I love this post:)). My favourite friend group is Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg and Magrat Garlick – the famous coven that features in Terry Pratchett’s fabulous Discworld series. I love the dynamic between the three witches – and my heroine is Granny Weatherwax, but given I’m now a grandmother three times over – perhaps I should model myself on Nanny Ogg?
Ohhh I’ll be reading through Equal Rites this month for the Discworld readathon, and I heard Granny Weatherwax will make her first appearance in it. I can’t wait to meet her! 🙂
I’ll be fascinated to hear what you make of her! I LOVE Granny Weatherwax – I just wish I had the creaking rocking chair and big boots…

I only read two books from the series but I loved the relationship between the sisterhood of the Traveling Pants <3 Also of course the Raven Cycle gang is one of the most adorable friendship groups ever.
I can’t wait to finish the Raven Cycle books but I’m also kind of dreading it? I want more of these characters!
That’s totally how I feel when I’m reading the last book! I was reading so slowly but I never wanted it to end :”)
I know the Ronan Trilogy is in the works and I’m hoping the other characters from the Raven Cycle make an appearance!
Yeah, I’ve heard so too, so it’s super exciting!!!
The Gentleman Bastards – nuff said.
Ah Dragon Age!
Love that game <3 Morrigan + Alastair were hilarious in their hatred for each other 😀
Omg yes! Their banter is the best. 😀
Oh I totally forgot about The Raven Boys when I wrote my post 😱 I loved their friendhship so very much!! I also really have to read The Lies of Locke Lamora, the book is beginning to sound better and better 🙂 Great choices! 💗
Thank you, Caro! I’m really excited to read the rest of the Raven Cycle series–the characters’ friendship is everything!
So this comment is like a week late (oops), but hi, yes times a thousand to the DA2 crew. I love them all so much. I haven’t had any time for video gaming lately, but the Dragon Age crews made such a huge mark on me that I still think about all those characters years after playing the games. I’m hoping I have the time to go back and replay at least DAO and DA2 sometime when I have a break from school.
Also, I really need to find time to read the Gentleman Bastards series! I’ve consistently heard great things about it.
Haha no worries! And YAY, another Dragon Age fan! I replayed the DA series so many times but the characters and the story somehow never become stale. I hope you you get a chance to replay them again! 😀 And the Gentleman Bastards series is a hell of a lot of fun. I’m chomping at the bits for any news on book 4
